When I multiply 2 fractions...

When I multiply 2 fractions, their product comes out less than each of the original fractions....why?

  1. Because multiplying by 1 will get the same, but multiplying by less than 1 will be less than original.

  2. because you have to go though a big proses and if need simplyf

  3. because when you multiply less than 1 you will find that it will be less than the original.

  4. I agree with CookieMonster 3269 because when doing it on paper then you will find it the same as cookiemonster3269.

  5. Because multiplying by less than one you will get that it will be less than the original fraction.

  6. I agree with kevinle and CookieMonster3269

  7. That's because in the end, usully you have to simplify yor answer.

  8. Also the fractions are less than 1 so there fore the answer will be less than the fractions, I agree with Ashley Wilson

  9. because when you are multiplying two fractions that are less than one you will get an answer that will be less than the original fraction.

  10. Because when the fractions are less than one, your answer will be less than the fractions. Also because you have to simplify it.

  11. because when you multiply fractions less than 1 your answer will be less than the original fractions, and because usually you have to simply it

  12. iAlso Agree With Ashley Wilson & nancy:]

  13. The reason your answer comes out less than the original fraction is because you have multiplied a number less then 1 by a number more than the other fraction but less than one. An example from an anonymous user on wikipedia, "if you have a quarter of the cake and you multiply the amount by three, then you end up with three quarters" an amount less then the original cake. The same happens when multiplying fractions as stated by the anonymous user on wikipedia, "if you have a quarter of the cake and you multiply the amount by a third, then you end up with a twelfth of the cake. In other words, a third of a quarter (or a third times a quarter) is a twelfth. Why? Because we are splitting each quarter into three pieces, and four quarters times three makes 12 parts (or twelfths)."

  14. I also I agree Nancy:], because multiplying a number by one gives you the same answer multiplied, so multiplying a number by a number less than one will give you an answer less the the original number. It's kind of like adding negetive numbers to positive numbers.

  16. When you multiply two numbers that is less then 1 your product will be less then 1. Because when you multiply 1 by a different your product is the same as the number you multiplied one by.

  17. When you multiply fractions that are less that one your product is going to be less than the original fraction, then simplify.

  18. The answer comes out less because when you get your answer a fraction may look smaller but its really bigger because it may seem small when you write it but when you draw it, it will be bigger than the original.

  19. Because when you multiply 2 fractions less than 1 your answer will be less than the original fractions, and also usually you have to simplify the fraction, I agree with [EMILY]

  21. When you multiply two fractions that are at a value of less than 1 your answer will be less than the original fraction. And if needed you could simplify the fraction.

  22. Mr.A you have to first put the fractions as an improper fractions before multipliying if it only has whole numbers. Then you multiply the numerators with numerators & denominators with denominaters. If the fraction is an improper fraction you have to simplify so that's why the answer is smaller than the original. This is [K@RL@ GUT13RR3Z]!!!

  23. Because when the fractions are less than one, your answer will be less than the fractions. Also because you have to simplify it. I agree with [N@NCY]!!!

  24. Mr. A,the reason that is,is because fractions aren't a whole so when they are multiplied you are breaking it into smaller and smaller pieces as you continue multiplying.

  25. Because the fraction is never a whole. No matter how much bigger the one fraction is then the other it is still a fraction and when you multiply it is still breaking the whole into pieces. You are multiplying by less than one so the product will be smaller. I agree with Ashley Wilson.

  26. It is because when you find your answer, you will have to simplify. It is also like this because the two or more fractions you are multiplying are less than one.

  27. I also agree with yoojae002, Ashley Wilson, and Kirby because they each have their own opinion that makes sense to me. _Mr. A, this is Jill Lapsley. :D

  28. Mr.A it's because a fraction is not a whole number and it doesn't matter because it will not be larger than with what you started with I agree with Swimmer Gurl and Michael111

  29. Because ussually at the end you end up simplifying the fractions.

  31. Because if you multiply by 1 it means that you have 1 of it so if you multiply by less than 1 you will have it less than 1 times.

  32. Because When You Multiply Fractions , It's Gonna Give You More Fractions. Unless You Simplify And Divide. For example, 10/20 Can Be Simplified So It's 1/2. You Divide 1 By 2 And As We All Know, It's 0.5. If You Multiply Decimals It Can Be One Whole (1)
