The reason your answer comes out less than the original fraction is because you have multiplied a number less then 1 by a number more than the other fraction but less than one. An example from an anonymous user on wikipedia, "if you have a quarter of the cake and you multiply the amount by three, then you end up with three quarters" an amount less then the original cake. The same happens when multiplying fractions as stated by the anonymous user on wikipedia, "if you have a quarter of the cake and you multiply the amount by a third, then you end up with a twelfth of the cake. In other words, a third of a quarter (or a third times a quarter) is a twelfth. Why? Because we are splitting each quarter into three pieces, and four quarters times three makes 12 parts (or twelfths)." I also I agree Nancy:], because multiplying a number by one gives you the same answer multiplied, so multiplying a number by a number less than one will give you an answer less the the original number. It's kind of like adding negetive numbers to positive numbers.
When you multiply two numbers that is less then 1 your product will be less then 1. Because when you multiply 1 by a different your product is the same as the number you multiplied one by.
The answer comes out less because when you get your answer a fraction may look smaller but its really bigger because it may seem small when you write it but when you draw it, it will be bigger than the original.

Mr.A you have to first put the fractions as an improper fractions before multipliying if it only has whole numbers. Then you multiply the numerators with numerators & denominators with denominaters. Because When You Multiply Fractions , It's Gonna Give You More Fractions. Unless You Simplify And Divide. For example, 10/20 Can Be Simplified So It's 1/2. You Divide 1 By 2 And As We All Know, It's 0.5. If You Multiply Decimals It Can Be One Whole (1)
Because multiplying by 1 will get the same, but multiplying by less than 1 will be less than original.
